Active Release Technique NYC Practitioners
Soft tissue injuries of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments can cause serious pain, limit mobility and restrict range of motion. It's not uncommon to overuse these parts of our bodies in our daily lives and feel the results, whether working in sedentary settings or more active ones.
At Living Well Medical in NYC, our comprehensive approach to injuries to the soft tissues of the body often includes the Active Release Technique (or ART) as part of a personalized treatment plan. In conjunction with our other therapies like physical rehabilitation and the Graston Technique, Active Release Technique can help resolve issues like tendinitis that often become chronic conditions.
How does Active Release Technique work?
So often, when doctors encounter overuse injuries, the pain is related to a buildup of scar tissue that binds muscle, tendon or ligament tissue together, also called an adhesion. The result can be a loss of functional strength and range of motion.
The Active Release Technique is a movement-based massage technique that can break up these dense tissue bonds. In an average ART session, the practitioner is both examining and treating at the same time using his or her hand, looking for areas of adhesion that need to be addressed.
Texture, tightness and movement will indicate these areas, and your practitioner combines specific movements with directed tension to resolve issues in the identified soft tissues.
Common Conditions Treated with Active Release Techniques
Active Release Technique (ART) has more than 500 distinct moves that can help reduce pain, and for nearly any kind of soft tissue pain (and even some forms of nerve entrapment like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome), there is a set of moves designed to treat it.
Some of the more common conditions and symptoms that can be treated with the Active Release Technique include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, tennis elbow, knee pain, TMJ/TMD, spinal pain/dysfunction, strains and sprains.
Chronic pain and injuries are one of our specialties at Living Well Medical in Downtown NYC, so if you have questions about treatment programs and the Active Release Technique, we are only a phone call away.
Active Release Technique NYC Provider in Manhattan
As an independent treatment method, ART can be very effective; however, as part of a complete plan for wellness, Living Well Medical in NYC pushes the standard of care even higher to provide the best treatment outcomes we possibly can.
Every one of our patients is an individual with a set of problems all their own - cookie cutter approaches just aren't good enough to get the kind of relief you need. That's why we design a customized program to get at the root of your pain and resolve the cause.
Active Release Technique is not a catch-all for soft tissue treatment, while its effectiveness may seem like it can treat near every myofacial issue. The living well is that the best course of treatment is always the one that works best for each individual case. Over the years the efficacy of the multidisciplinary approach has naturally made itself standard, with many practices following this approach as a new standard over the years. In many of our cases ART has been best combined with physical therapy and corrective exercise.
The average patient suffering from, for instance carpal tunnel syndrome or a patellar tracking disorder, will undergo ART, or for an even more acute approach, the Graston technique. After treatment the patient will get advice for proper gait, form, and technique, as common sense corrections for avoiding future injuries and complications. Once the pain has subsided and range of motion is restored to a point where physical therapy becomes an option, the patient then undergoes physical therapy in conjunction with ART. This "fast track" approach is used to ensure that as the myofascial tissue heals and restores itself, that the newly regained range of motion and mobility are not used to compensate for bad form, leading to new or more injuries.
