Sports Injuries

New York City is a place full of active people; walking through any NYC park, you're bound to find people running, playing sports and generally just being active. New Yorkers work hard and play hard, and any time you work your body hard, there is a possibility for injury. Sports injuries are as varied as the people who suffer them, but for non-contact sports, they are often associated with overuse and strain to muscles.

What is an overuse injury?

Overuse injuries go by many names - you've likely heard one of them before (repetitive stress injury, repetitive motion injuries, repetitive motion disorder (RMD), cumulative trauma disorder (CT), occupational overuse syndrome, overuse syndrome, regional musculoskeletal disorder). All of those names are a description of injuries caused by repetition as is the case in so many of the sports we enjoy. Running, soccer, football, baseball - pretty much you name it - they all require repetition to improve performance, and it's that very repetition that can cause problems. In fact, even seemingly benign activities like typing and sitting in an odd position can cause overuse and pain.

In this section we'll explore a few of the more common types of RSI, all of which are treated here at Living Well Medical in NYC.

Shin Splints

If you're a runner, chances are at some point you've had a run-in (excuse the bad pun) with shin splints. It's irritating, painful and can put a complete stop to any training or regular running you do. Also referred to as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, shin splints are a runner's nightmare. Caused by the inflammation of tendons, often due to biomechanical issues like pronation or flat feet, treatment for shin splints can typical be conservative including rest, physical therapy, therapeutic taping methods like Power Taping and icing.

IT Band Pain

The Iliotibial band, or IT band, is an area of the thigh that often becomes painful for runners, hikers and endurance athletes in general. It is located on the outer part of the thigh and associated with knee pain as well. It can be an extremely painful problem but thankfully it is possible to treat IT band pain effectively using the conservative regimen we refer to as RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). What's more, with other non-invasive treatments like physiotherapy, the Graston Technique, and ART have been noted to help encourage faster relief from pain.

Runner's Knee

For athletes and sports enthusiasts that put a lot of strain on their knees, runner's knee might be a familiar phrase. This extremely painful problem that results from the patella (kneecap bone) rubbing against the femoral groove where the kneecap rests upon the femur. Runner's knee is perhaps the most common running injury. Like so many other overuse problems, techniques like cryotherapy, physical therapy and rest are important for proper healing.

Pulled Hamstring / Hamstring Strain

Hamstring injuries are notorious for sticking around, overstaying their welcome and generally being a pain in the neck. Proper stretching is important to avoid an injury like a hamstring pull, but once you've sustained an injury to the hamstring, immediately ceasing the activity that caused the pain is the most important step. From there, seeing a physiotherapist can help speed up recovery.

Achilles Tendonitis

Another common and frustrating running/sports injury is Achilles Tendonitis. Often taking an extended period of time to heal because of its poor blood supply, an injury to the Achilles tendon usually completely interrupts training as it can be severely painful. There are many causes of heel pain like Achilles tendonitis, so the treatments are just as wide, but custom orthotics, cryotherapy, and rest are some of the most common ways to stop the pain.
