Spinal Stenosis Treatment NYC

What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a painful back condition caused by the narrowing of the spinal column. In some cases, a person is born with this narrowing, but in most cases, it is a direct result of the wear and tear of the aging process. Spinal discs can cause certain types of stenosis.

The cartilaginous discs between the vertebrae act as shock absorbers for much of the stress and impact our spines are subject to. These disc structures are composed mainly of water and over time begin to lose much of this water content, placing greater stress on other structures of the spine. In some cases, the weight bearing shift causes great strain on the bony facet joints of the spine. Normally, human bone responds to mechanical stress by making more bone in the areas of highest stress. Under normal circumstances, this strengthens the bone and improves durability. But in this case, the facet joints share space with the spinal column and as they grow in size, the spinal column begins to narrow.

Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis

As the bones in the spine thicken and cause narrowing of the spinal column, sensitive spinal nerves will slowly become impinged. The irritated spinal nerve roots can cause back pain and may trigger symptoms describing sciatica and radiculopathy. Sciatica pain typically appears as a burning, tingling sensation that radiates through the lower back, buttock, or various parts of the leg and foot. Radiculopathy describes sensations of numbness, muscular weakness, or difficulty moving the leg. These symptoms can be all at once painful, debilitating, and scary.

Spinal Stenosis Treatment NYC

Spinal Stenosis doesn't always cause pain, but when it does, the result can be unbearable. For these patients, Living Well Medical in Manhattan, NYC offers a comprehensive array of therapies that are selected to suit your needs.

For some patients, non-surgical spinal decompression with the DRX 9000 can help relieve pain. This effective technology can create negative pressure in a weakened disc that stimulates blood flow and the return of nutrients. As the disc regains its form and functionality, pressure is taken off of the other spinal structures and the natural healing process is encouraged.

Strengthening the core muscle group with specific exercises can help slow the degeneration of intervertebral discs. Physical rehabilitation and specific guided exercises can help strengthen the muscles that help support the weight-bearing structures of the spine. Skilled employment of various adjustment techniques by an experienced chiropractor like Dr. Steven Shoshany can also relieve the pain and aid in regaining functionality and range of motion.

At Living Well Medical in NYC, we help patients stop the pain and get on with their lives. If you are suffering with back or neck pain and need support, let us guide you back to wellness.
