Herniated Disc Treatment NYC
Your spine is built to handle the load that you place on it each day while you sit or stand. It's also built to stand against the load-bearing work that we all do, whether occasional or as part of an occupation. As we age, however, that function tends to diminish, and the potential for problems with spinal structures increases. A herniated disc is one of those painful spinal conditions that forces its way into almost every part of your life. Whether the result of long-term wear or a sudden trauma, the nerve pain from a herniated disc so often takes control of a person's life, leaving them feeling trapped and fearful that surgery might be in their future. Living Well Medical in NYC can help you stop the pain of disc herniation without surgery by conservatively treating it at the source.
Physically, a herniated disc occurs when the outer ring of a disc (called the annulus) is breached by the softer nucleus. The nucleus is primarily responsible for absorbing impacts, and as we age, the annulus can dry out, leaving it more susceptible to herniation. In the event that the nucleus does break through, it can push into the spinal canal which serves as the conduit for the body's main nerves. This brings the disc nucleus into contact with the spinal nerves, and over time, leads to irritation, inflammation and compression of nerve tissue. In the case of the lower back (i.e. lumbar spine), a herniated disc leads to the symptoms commonly referred to as sciatica.
For all nerve compressions from spinal disc herniation, the symptoms can include severe pain (can be burning, shooting, or sharp), numbness, tingling, muscle weakness or pins and needles sensation (also called paresthesia). Depending upon the location and severity of the herniation, patients may experience pain in different areas. Typically, a herniated disc in the lower back will cause pain in the lower back and below whereas a cervical disc (of the neck) will likely cause pain in the neck, shoulders and upper back. Muscle weakness and numbness are generally associated with more serious cases, but only after a complete evaluation can a doctor make a determination.
Herniated discs often respond well to, and can be effectively relieved by, conservative means. At Living Well Medical in Manhattan, NYC, we take a comprehensive approach to treatment that combines multiple treatment methods into a customized treatment program designed just for you.
In most cases, patients with a herniated disc will benefit from non-surgical spinal decompression with the DRX 9000 as part of a complete program. The DRX 9000 is a potent new technology that can increase disc height to take pressure off of spinal nerves. Over time, decompression therapy has been noted to help the body carry valuable nutrients to the affected disc to aid in the healing process. Ask our doctor if spinal decompression therapy is right for you.
Increasing the strength of the supporting muscles in the spine is another important aspect of preventative treatment. Physical rehabilitation and exercise therapy as part of a herniated disc treatment plan can make a difference in avoiding future injuries to the same area. The Spine Force muscle re-education system is a powerful rehabilitative tool that we use to strengthen the back muscles that are in part responsible for maintaining proper spinal alignment and is one of the many resources we place at the fingertips of our patients for their treatment.
Gentle adjustment from an experienced chiropractor like our Dr. Steven Shoshany can also help relieve back and neck pain from a herniated disc. Using a Cox Flexion table, patients are run through a specific series of movements that can reduce pain from a herniated disc.
These are only a few of the many treatment options that are available at Living Well Medical in Downtown Manhattan. For each of our patients, we go the extra mile to find out what hurts and make it stop.
